Which Schengen country should I apply to? The main destination rule

InterPASS editorial · Last verified: 12 September 2026 · Source: EU Visa Code

If you are travelling to more than one Schengen country, which country you apply to is not left to your choice. The competent country follows from the trip itself.

Short response

If you are travelling to a single country, that country is competent. If you will stay in more than one country for the same purpose, the country where you spend the most nights is the main destination. If the stays are of equal length, the country of first entry is taken into account. Where there is a dominant purpose such as a business event, that purpose may be more decisive than the number of nights.

Main destination and multi-country route

If going to only one country, that country is authorized. If you are going to stay in more than one country for the same purpose, the country where you spend the most nights is the main destination; If the periods are equal, the first country of entry is taken into account. The main purpose, such as commercial activity, may be more decisive than the number of nights. It is not right to apply to another country to find an appointment without changing the actual route.

How are nights counted?

The count is based on nights spent, not on hours spent in a country. Overnight travel, transfers and airport waiting time do not count as overnight stays. Putting the route into a table is the safest approach: each row gives the date, the city, the country and where the night will be spent. When the table is complete, the main destination becomes visible by itself.

A worked example: on a route with four nights in Italy, three in France and two in Spain, the main destination is Italy, and the application is made to Italy's official channel in Türkiye. The first flight landing in Paris does not change this result.

Equal stays and the dominant purpose

If the same number of nights is spent in two countries, the country of first entry is taken as the basis. If the purposes differ, the dominant purpose is established first. On a trip with three nights of tourist accommodation and one day at a trade fair, if the reason for the trip is the fair, the main destination may be the country where the fair is held. This assessment must be supported by the documents in the file.

Why the country is not chosen according to appointment availability

Applying to the country with the earlier appointment looks practical; but the route on the application form, the accommodation documents and the flights show the real plan. An application to a country that is not competent creates a contradiction between the file and the declaration and may be assessed under the criterion of the reliability of documents. Genuinely changing the route is a different matter; if all documents are built around the new route, the competent country changes too.

Niche questions and answers

Does the country where I transit become the main destination?

No. An airport transfer does not count as an overnight stay. If the Schengen area is not entered during the transfer, a separate assessment is required.

What happens if my route changes later?

Reasonable changes that occur after the visa has been issued do not invalidate the declaration. Concealing a change that was known at the time of application, however, affects the reliability of the declaration.

If both countries have the same number of nights, which do I choose?

If the stays are of equal length, the country of first entry is taken into account. If the purposes differ, the dominant purpose is established first.

Is a visa from the main destination valid throughout the Schengen area?

A short-stay Schengen visa is as a rule valid throughout the area; visas issued with limited territorial validity are the exception and are stated on the visa sticker.

What happens if I never travel to the main destination?

A visa is issued on the basis of the plan declared in the application. Not carrying out that plan at all may be assessed under the criterion of the reliability of statements in later applications.

When applying with my family, do we all apply to the same country?

For applicants travelling the same route together, the competent country is the same. If the routes differ, each application is assessed according to its own main destination.
