What does B-1, B-2 and B-1/B-2 mean?

B-2; for tourism, visiting family or friends and suitable short visit purposes. B-1 may cover temporary business visits, such as certain business meetings, conferences, and business contacts. A combined B-1/B-2 visa can cover two visit purposes; It does not authorize you to work in the country.

For trips where academic or vocational education is the main purpose, student categories such as F or M are evaluated separately. It would be wrong to present the visitor visa as a general education or work permit.
