Biometrics, timing and multiple-entry visas
When should the application be made, are fingerprints taken again every time, and how is a multiple-entry visa granted? All three questions are settled in the same place: in the file itself.
An application can generally be made six months before the trip. Although normal examination falls within a framework of 15 calendar days, further examination may extend to 45 days. Having given fingerprints before does not remove the requirement to attend in person in every case. A multiple-entry visa cannot be bought for a separate fee; the number of entries and the period of validity granted are for the consulate to assess.
Biometry, duration and very input request
Having previously been fingerprinted does not remove physical participation in every file. Identity, age, availability of previous registration and representation instructions are checked. Application can generally be made six months before travel; Leaving it to the last 15 days creates risks in terms of both appointment and examination. Although the normal review is within the framework of 15 calendar days, the additional review may take up to 45 days.
Requesting a multiple entry or long validity visa is not a separate guarantee. The result is determined by the proper use of previous visas, travel need, passport duration and consular evaluation. Long validity does not remove the 90/180 short stay limit.
Build the calendar backwards
Planning backwards from the travel date reduces the risk of finding no appointment. In order: fix the travel date, leave at least 15 calendar days for examination, add a margin of up to 45 days for possible further examination, allow time to search for an appointment, and place document preparation before that. On this schedule the application is submitted two to three months before the trip.
Validity and length of stay are not the same thing
The validity period on the visa sticker shows the period in which you may use the visa. The length of stay on the sticker states how many days in total you may stay within that period. A visa valid for one year does not give a right to stay for one year: the rule of at most 90 days in any 180-day period continues to apply, and the permission on the visa may be shorter still.

Niche questions and answers
Do I need to go to the application if my fingerprint is registered?
Just because previous biometrics can be reused doesn't always mean you won't show up in person. Identity, age, time of previous registration and current instructions of the relevant center are checked together.
Is there a separate fee for requesting a multiple entry visa?
Short-term Schengen fee does not increase according to the number of entries. Requesting multiple entries is justified; The number of entries to be issued and the validity period are the discretion of the consulate.
Can the examination exceed 45 days?
The period may be extended for files that require further examination. For that reason it is better to build the calendar backwards than to apply close to the travel date.
Can I buy a paid expedited service?
Premium lounge, courier and other non-appointment services offered by application centres concern the comfort of submission and return; they do not change the examination time or the decision.
Does my passport validity limit the visa?
Yes. The validity of the visa granted depends on the passport; even if a longer tier is reached, the passport expiry date can be decisive.
